    Native theological training within Canadian evangelicalism: Three case studies

    This thesis explores the attitudes of EuroCanadian. Protestant evangelical Christians, towards Canada\u27s aboriginal peoples, particularly as they pertain to the training of Native ministerial candidates. In addition to EuroCanadian perspectives, Native voices are included in this examination, speciļ¬cally, the opinions and attitudes expressed by aboriginal individuals who either have had experience as Native candidates under the tutelage of non-Native teachers and administrators, or who have spent many years observing the effects of such training upon their youth and their churches. Chapter 1, a history of missionization in Canada, is a discussion of the historical context in which theological training institutions which serve Native candidates find themselves. To bring the reader up to date on socio-political changes which have affected indigenous peoples in Canada as they relate to the issue of the training of Native candidates for Protestant Christian ministry today, Chapter 2 presents a short discussion of the contemporary scene in Canada. Chapter 3 consists of an analysis of evangelical approaches to and attitudes towards aboriginal peoples and their preparation for ministry. In order to accomplish this, two case studies have been done, wherein l have made use of interviews and other data gathered from two evangelical Bible Colleges and a few other comparative sources. Chapter 4 presents a study of a northern Native Bible College in which Native voices may be heard on the subject of the training of their ministerial candidates, not in opposition to or as a response to non-Native perceptions and agendas, but for their own sakes. This thesis ends with some concluding remarks, including several personal observations and concerns for mission strategy and future academic research

    Comparing the information capacity of entangled Laguerre-Gaussian and Hermite-Gaussian modal sets in a finite-aperture system

    Using a spontaneous parametric down-conversion process to create entangled spatial states, we compare the information capacity associated with measurements in the Hermiteā€“Gaussian and Laguerreā€“Gaussian modal basis in an optical system of finite aperture. We show that the cross-talk imposed by the aperture restriction degrades the information capacity. However, the Laguerreā€“Gaussian mode measurements show greater resilience to cross talk than the Hermiteā€“Gaussian, suggesting that the Laguerreā€“Gaussian modal set may still offer real-world advantages over other modal sets

    Nurse incivility is currently prevalent in the nursing workplace. Incivility is described in the form of disrespectful attitudes and behaviors. Ethnic values may be ignored by those committing uncivil behaviors. Victims of incivility may not report uncivil incidents. Organizations and other stakeholders may discover difficulty in responding or exploring causative incivility behavior. Workplace incivility may be displayed as unsafe actions, nurse management errors, and staff dissatisfaction. Nursing staff may decide on resigning positions because of workplace incivility. Healthy, civil, caring workplace environments are imperative to patient and staff well-being. Workplace incivility intervention may introduce a solution to uncivil behavior, rebuild working relationships, increase staff fulfillment, and restore a healthy environment. Organizational mindfulness intervention may be used to stimulate leadership on investigating incivility motives, pursuing resolutions to uncivil events, and assuring staff satisfaction. Mindfulness intervention actions may cultivate caring and perceptive behaviors. Striving on understanding others and self-reflection on moral and ethical values are activities of mindfulness intervention. Mindfulness intervention may mitigate workplace incivility

    DMD-based software-configurable spatially-offset Raman spectroscopy for spectral depth-profiling of optically turbid samples

    Spectral depth-profiling of optically turbid samples is of high interest to a broad range of applications. We present a method for measuring spatially-offset Raman spectroscopy (SORS) over a range of length scales by incorporating a digital micro-mirror device (DMD) into a sample-conjugate plane in the detection optical path. The DMD can be arbitrarily programmed to collect/reject light at spatial positions in the 2D sample-conjugate plane, allowing spatially offset Raman measurements. We demonstrate several detection geometries, including annular and simultaneous multi-offset modalities, for both macro- and micro-SORS measurements, all on the same instrument. Compared to other SORS modalities, DMD-based SORS provides more flexibility with only minimal additional experimental complexity for subsurface Raman collection

    The transition from a coherent optical vortex to a Rankine vortex: beam contrast dependence on topological charge

    Spatially coherent helically phased light beams carry orbital angular momentum (OAM) and contain phase singularities at their centre. Destructive interference at the position of the phase singularity means the intensity at this point is necessarily zero, which results in a high contrast between the centre and the surrounding annular intensity distribution. Beams of reduced spatial coherence yet still carrying OAM have previously been referred to as Rankine vortices. Such beams no longer possess zero intensity at their centre, exhibiting a contrast that decreases as their spatial coherence is reduced. In this work, we study the contrast of a vortex beam as a function of its spatial coherence and topological charge. We show that beams carrying higher values of topological charge display a radial intensity contrast that is more resilient to a reduction in spatial coherence of the source

    Holographic optical trapping Raman micro-spectroscopy for non-invasive measurement and manipulation of live cells

    We present a new approach for combining holographic optical tweezers with confocal Raman spectroscopy. Multiple laser foci, generated using a liquid-crystal spatial light modulator, are individually used for both optical trapping and excitation of spontaneous Raman spectroscopy from trapped objects. Raman scattering from each laser focus is spatially filtered using reflective apertures on a digital micro-mirror device, which can be reconfigured with flexible patterns at video rate. We discuss operation of the instrument, and performance and viability considerations for biological measurements. We then demonstrate the capability of the instrument for fast, flexible, and interactive manipulation with molecular measurement of interacting live cell systems

    Development of a 3D printer using scanning projection stereolithography

    We have developed a system for the rapid fabrication of low cost 3D devices and systems in the laboratory with micro-scale features yet cm-scale objects. Our system is inspired by maskless lithography, where a digital micromirror device (DMD) is used to project patterns with resolution up to 10 Āµm onto a layer of photoresist. Large area objects can be fabricated by stitching projected images over a 5cm2 area. The addition of a z-stage allows multiple layers to be stacked to create 3D objects, removing the need for any developing or etching steps but at the same time leading to true 3D devices which are robust, configurable and scalable. We demonstrate the applications of the system by printing a range of micro-scale objects as well as a fully functioning microfluidic droplet device and test its integrity by pumping dye through the channels
